St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish History 

Bishop Jules B. Jeanmard blessed the Church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus the morning of Sunday, October 19, 1927. Reverend Oscar J. Chauvin, Chancellor of the Diocese of Lafayette at the time, celebrated the first mass. January 4, 1929 would be the official date ascribed to the Charter of the Congregation of the Church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, Diocese of Lafayette. On January 11, 1934, Reverend Louis Bertrand purchased the Cemetery located on N A Street.

 

Reverend Oscar Chauvin resurrected the new church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus and celebrated the "first mass" of the new church on Sunday, February 16, 1969. The old church, at center of Block No. 25 was torn down in 1971. The Blessing of the Church was celebrated on Thursday, May 1st, 1969 with Bishop Maurice Schexnayder.

 

Monsignor Ignatious A. Martin made significant changes at the Parish. The marble altar on which the blessed sacrament was placed, was undone, and the marble was used to build a new baptismal font with perpetual running water. He also obtained a rostrum and Tabernacle, updated the public address system, and converted the two side-aisle confessionals into two devotionals.

 

In early 1990, Msgr. Martin announced plans to construct the Family Life Center Building. on May 6, 1990, ground breaking ceremonies were held after the 10 A.M. mass. Mass was celebrated as the first official event ceremony in the Family Life Center on Friday , December 28, 1990 in mark of the 75th birthday of Msgr. Martin with Celebrant Bishop Harry Flynn and Monsignor as co-celebrant.
